MTB MAINTENANCE

There are many good bike shops in the Mornington area and it is important to support them. If you fancy having a little more knowledge then these videos may help you understand what is involved.

Mountain bikes are worked hard so regular maintenance and inspections are vital for your own safety and the lifespan of your bike. Here are some basic things to take care of

  • Never spray lubricant on or near your MTB brakes. The oil destroys all friction pads and you will have to replace the pads and possibly the rotors.

  • Clean your bike after a ride using a detergent and warm water.

  • Check tyres for root damage, nips & tears and inspect the frame, chain and forks for anything that looks like wear. If you have any concerns pop into your local bike service centre.

  • Always carry a spare tube, tyre levers, a multi-tool, a pump and some cable ties. It can be a long walk home.

  • Always carry a mobile phone - but don't use it when riding - duh Let somebody else know where you are going and when you intend to be back.

  • Be respectful of of others on the trails. Let people know you are approaching. We rely on goodwill and expect others to treat us as we treat them.

  • Always carry water.

  • Always wear a cycle helmet - Its the law and you only have one brain.

  • Cycle carriers in Victoria are required to display an official illuminated Vic Roads number plate. Not all police officers are sympathetic if they catch you without a tailboard. Do not make up a cardboard or poly-board number plate - It is a heavily fined offence in Victoria. Check Vic Roads website for all the rules. The tail board is required to have brake, indicators and a matching illuminated Vic Roads number plate. If you carry your bikes on the roof obviously know how tall the vehicle actually is. Fast food drive-throughs and many car parks have barriers set much lower than one might expect.

  • A properly serviced bike is essential for your own safety. If you aren't experienced or lack mechanical empathy it makes sense to use one of the many good bike repair shops in our local area. Do not attempt work that you may not be able to complete properly. If you start something that gets out of hand please take it to a workshop. Don't take a chance.Mountain biking involves fast speeds, the ability to control and balance your bike. A regular bike check over by a bike mechanic is highly recommended.

  • Washing your bike after a ride allows you time to spot damaged tyres, wheels and other critical safety items. A suspension mountain bike contains moving parts which require ongoing maintenance and regular checking. Don't be fooled by the 'cool dude' attitude of mountain bikers - Sensible maintenance helps to keep riders SAFE.
